Istanbul is good ground for a heat pump. An air source heat pump becomes less efficient as the outside air temperature falls, and Istanbul's winters are mild and changeable rather than long spells of deep sub-zero cold. That is why air source systems in the city stay inside a comfortable operating range for longer than they would in a very cold climate. At EFE YAPI VAİLLANT we install heat pumps in Istanbul, and we settle the choice of unit around the home's heat loss and its existing pipework.

Two different housing realities sit side by side in Istanbul: detached houses and villas with a garden or a large balcony, and blocks of flats where there is little room for an outdoor unit. The technical part of a heat pump decision usually turns not on the unit itself but on where the outdoor unit will go, what water temperature the pipework runs at, and what the electrical supply can take. We do not talk about capacity until those three points have been settled at the survey.

On this page we set out the installation conditions specific to Istanbul, the difference between existing homes with radiators and newer homes with underfloor heating, and the logic of a hybrid set-up in homes with a gas connection. You can review the models on the heat pump products page, and see our scope on the heat pump solutions page.

Why a Vaillant heat pump for Istanbul?

Istanbul's climate suits air source systems

An air source heat pump moves the heat in the outside air indoors; as the outside temperature falls, it uses more electricity to produce the same heat. Because Istanbul's winter is mild and changeable rather than a long run of hard frosts, the unit works in an easier range through the season. Even so, the coldest days are the starting point for the design: we choose capacity for the hardest day of the year, not the easiest.

Both sides of the city, one team

Our installation service covers Türkiye nationwide; within Istanbul there is no difference in scope between the Anatolian side and the European side. Our showroom is based in [Ümraniye](/isi-pompasi/umraniye), and we travel to the city's other districts for surveys and installations. We look at the conditions specific to Istanbul on this page, and apply the same one-team approach to projects outside the city.

A different set-up for flats and detached homes

In detached houses and villas the outdoor unit goes in the garden or on a suitable external wall, and space is rarely the problem. In flats it is the size of the balcony, noise for the neighbours, the look of the façade and written permission from the building management that decide it. We discuss those conditions first at the survey, and if they cannot be met we do not start the project.

High flow temperatures for existing homes with radiators

Most of Istanbul's housing stock is heated by radiators, and radiators want a higher water temperature than underfloor heating. This is where it matters that **aroTHERM pro** delivers flow temperatures up to 70 °C and **aroTHERM plus** up to 75 °C, which makes keeping the existing radiator system possible on most projects. We decide which radiators need changing with a room-by-room heat loss calculation.

Our Heat Pump Families

aroTHERM pro

A monobloc model using natural R290 refrigerant; rated A+++ and delivering flow temperatures up to 70 °C, with four capacities. This is the first family we recommend for Istanbul homes that want to keep an existing radiator system.

aroTHERM plus

A monobloc heat pump delivering flow temperatures up to 75 °C; the catalogue lists it in 8, 12 and 15 kW capacities. Preferred in large detached houses with radiators and a high heat loss.

aroTHERM Split plus

A split solution in 4, 6 and 8 kW capacities; because part of the circuit sits in the indoor unit, the outdoor unit stays more compact. It gives flexibility in flats and small detached houses where the space for an outdoor unit is limited.

aroTHERM Split intro

A split range using R32 refrigerant, offered in 8, 10, 12 and 16 kW capacities and with backup electric heater options. The backup heater is brought in on projects that want extra support on the coldest days.

aroTHERM pure Split

An R32 split range in 6, 8 and 10 kW capacities, with versions carrying a 190-litre cylinder. A practical starting point for homes that want heating and domestic hot water solved in a single package.

flexoTHERM / flexoCOMPACT exclusive

A multi-source heat pump family that can run on ground, water or air, in 5, 8, 11, 15 and 19 kW capacities. Considered on villa projects whose garden has room for a ground source.

How the Process Works

1

1. Enquiry and initial call

On WhatsApp or by phone we talk through the property type, the district, the floor area and your current heating system. We settle the survey and installation scope, the state of your pipework and the space you have in mind for the outdoor unit.

2

2. On-site survey

Our team comes to your address in Istanbul and looks at the insulation, the radiator or underfloor system, the space available for the outdoor unit and the electrical panel on site. In a block of flats, building management permission and noise for the neighbours are discussed at this stage too.

3

3. System design and quotation

The capacity, the monobloc/split decision, the cylinder volume and the control unit are settled from the heat loss. Your project-specific quote goes out in writing over WhatsApp; pricing is given only in that way, as an individual quote.

4

4. Installation

The outdoor unit base, the hydraulic connections, the electrical supply and the condensate drainage are carried out to suit the design. Our installation service applies across Türkiye.

5

5. Commissioning and handover

The system is filled, the air is purged and the flow rates set, and the control unit is configured along with the heating curve. At handover we show you on site how to use myVAILLANT Smart or sensoCOMFORT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — chosen at the right capacity, an Istanbul winter is not demanding for an air source heat pump. Long spells of deep sub-zero temperatures are rare in the city, which keeps the unit in a more efficient range through the season. Even so, we calculate capacity from the coldest day rather than the average one. Too little capacity means losing comfort on the days you need it most.

Heat Pumps in Istanbul: The Right Decision Between Climate, Building Type and Pipework

On Istanbul heat pump projects you have to start with the climate. An air source heat pump does not create heat; it takes it from the outside air and carries it into the home, and as the outside temperature falls it uses more electricity for the same comfort. Istanbul's winter is favourable in that respect, because long spells of deep sub-zero temperatures are not the city's typical winter picture. That means the unit spends most of the season in a comfortable operating range. Even so, we choose capacity for the coldest day of the year rather than an average winter day, because a heat pump is only as useful as its ability to cover the hardest day. If you want to get to the bottom of the subject, our guide to what a heat pump is is a good starting point.

The second deciding factor is the building type. In detached houses and villas with gardens, finding a spot for the outdoor unit is usually easy; the unit goes in the garden or on a suitable external wall, positioned so that nothing blocks the airflow. In flats the job turns much more into a layout problem: the size of the balcony, the distance from the unit to the neighbours' windows, the look of the façade and where the condensate will drain all have to be solved one by one. Written permission from the building management is required for any work touching a communal area or the building's façade. You obtain that permission; at the survey we show you which points it will cover and where the unit can sit. If no suitable place emerges, we say so at the start rather than forcing the project.

The third heading, and often the most critical, is the existing pipework. Newer homes with underfloor heating run at a low flow temperature and suit a heat pump naturally. A significant share of Istanbul's homes, though, are heated by radiators, and radiators want a higher water temperature for the same comfort. This is exactly where aroTHERM pro's ability to deliver flow temperatures up to 70 °C becomes decisive: moving to a heat pump without stripping out the existing radiator system is possible on most projects. In homes with a high heat loss, aroTHERM plus and its 75 °C come into play. Even so, not every room's radiator surface will cover the new temperature regime; we decide that with a room-by-room calculation. For the detail on the R290 model, read our aroTHERM pro review.

In homes with a gas connection the question is usually the same: should I get rid of the combi boiler? It is not compulsory. A hybrid set-up running the heat pump alongside the existing boiler rests on the heat pump covering most of the season, with the boiler supporting it on the coldest days or when hot water demand is heavy. Whether that makes sense depends on the home's heat loss, the state of the pipework and the age of the boiler. If you want to compare the two systems in your own mind, our heat pump vs combi boiler comparison tackles exactly that question; for work on the boiler side, see our combi boiler installation service.

Domestic hot water and the control unit are part of the same project. In homes that want hot water from the heat pump, the uniSTOR RW cylinders built for heat pumps, in the 200–500 litre range, come into play; the volume is chosen from the number of bathrooms and how the household uses it. We manage the system with the myVAILLANT Smart or sensoCOMFORT controls and set the heating curve around how the home actually behaves; that setting has a direct effect on the comfort you get and the electricity you use. The practical side of heat pump installation in Istanbul is what most often gets overlooked. The outdoor unit has to sit on a base that keeps vibration out of the building, with clearance front and back for airflow and service access left unobstructed. The condensate has to drain into a line that will not freeze in winter. On the electrical side the consumer unit capacity, the fuses and the cable sizes are checked; depending on capacity and model, a three-phase supply may come into play. These are all items looked at one by one at the survey, and none of them should turn into a surprise later. We have gathered the pre-installation checklist in our article on heat pump installation requirements.

Let us be clear on cost: there are no prices on this page, because a heat pump price is not a ready-made list. The capacity, the monobloc or split preference, the cylinder volume, the control unit and the work to be done on the pipework all change the total directly. The logic of the payback calculation is this: you compare the investment cost of the system against the difference between the annual energy cost of your current heating method and the cost you reach with a heat pump. We set out step by step how to build that calculation from your own consumption in our article on heat pump costs and savings; the numbers for your own home we settle after the survey.
